Mother Earth Day 2016 : Saving Our Environment

Every year we celebrate mother Earth Day on 22nd of April, to protect our planet we are residing.
Do you know that we are very near to observe the 50th Mother Earth Day?

But the Question is why we need to observe this?

Why are we making so much effort, raising awareness, arranging walks, voting for the need of prompt action?

Why?

The simplest answer is

We are guilty.

Yes! You got it right, we are guilty of being cruel to our environment, bringing destruction to our home, to our own living place. We have interrupted the balance of the ecosystem provided by nature. With our obsession of Industrialization, we have forgotten our living partners, our Natural friends, the bounties nature has provided us.

Now, as a result, we have to admit that 2015 is the hottest year up to date, the airway diseases have risen strikingly, the frequent sore throats, the more heat stroke cases. These are all the gifts of bizarre global changes brought by us. Climatologists have warned that if no appropriate action is taken, these changes will become irreversible.

We have not only become hazardous to ourselves but has also brought danger to our animal friends. They play a significant role in maintaining the balance of life. The list of the endangered species is on the rise. The recent animal on the verge of extinction is Javan Tigers, the others include Indus Dolphins, Snow leopard, Giant Panda, Musk Deer to name a few. They got killed vicariously by choking, the lack of food and habitat, various diseases, (not to mention the excessive and unlawful hunting).

Well, some of our animal friends have taken a leap and become a warrior to heal the damage we have done to our Mother Earth. They not only provide help by maintaining a balance in the ecosystem but also extend a hand to clean the garbage.

In the following video, you can see a site filled with garbage and the cows surrounding them.  It is a part of their daily stroll, together these cows wander to find any leftovers, any organics, gulping them down bravely offering their help to decrease the trash, to start the first step of recycling by separating any organic leftovers.
But what are we giving them in return?

More trash, more dirt, less grass, less healthy food, more inappropriate living conditions.
It is high time that we should come out of the shell and take a look around to the havoc we have created yet nature is so patient that it keeps alarming us with the hottest weather, with more storms, with illnesses, continuously knocking to pay heed.
Are we listening to these calls?

Natural Remedies For Blood Clots That Have No Side Effects

Blood, the fuel running our body, has been doing a marvelous job since we were born.  It is flowing smoothly throughout, transporting nutrients to the body cells, helping in sustaining life.

Blood makes up about 8% of the body weight. The role of the blood in our life is notoriously overlooked, but when we get a cut or any other injury, it is the components in blood which form the clot preventing unnecessary loss of blood. A clot is simply an amalgamation of red blood cells and other cell components which build up at the site of injury to stop the flow.

Risk factors associated with blood clots usually involve abnormalities in the blood conduction system caused by high cholesterol, smoking, obesity, blood disorder, liver disease, injury, surgery, family history, being bed ridden or bone fractures.

Symptoms and Presentation of Blood Clots

Symptoms of blood clots depend on their location, whether they are occurring in an artery or a vein, resulting in different clinical conditions.

A blood clot that is formed in an artery that supplies blood to the heart results in CVA or a Heart attack. If it causes blockage of blood to the brain, it may result in TIA or stroke.

The clinical presentation of a Venous Clot is not usually acute and may result in the feeling of warmth, swelling, redness and discoloration. In the case of Pulmonary Embolism, (when the clot formed in a distant vein causes blockage in the lung circulation) the clot can be life threatening needing emergency treatment and supervision.

How to maximize health benefits of drinking water early morning

Most of us already know, and agree, that there are numerous health benefits of drinking water after waking up early morning. There are different point of views on whether drinking water early morning without brushing is better than after brushing, but to me, that's besides the point. Water is the simplest form of any liquid or food that we ingest. Our body is composed of 60% of water. We can survive on water, without food, for 3-4 weeks. Without water, we would perish due to dehydration within 3 days. Most of the natural fruits and vegetables, especially those with high fiber content, contain water. Besides quenching our thirst, water as has been used as therapy for many other reasons, like calming down when we are angry, controlling anxiety, getting over a panic attack, losing weight, overcoming indigestion and constipation, finding relief from headaches and heart aches (aka heart diseases) and treating liver and kidney diseases. Infact, there are studies that show that drinking water on empty stomach can lower the risk of colorectal and bladder cancers.

But then, how much water should we drink in the morning? Some say two glasses, others say four. Japanese claim you can cure zillion of diseases by taking 4 x 160 ml glasses (about 640 ml) of drinking water on after waking up early morning. Some websites even recommend gulping down a liter of water early morning. I suggest taking as much water as one can tolerate and divide it throughout the day.

You have to be careful of water intoxication. Yes, really, you can drown in your own fluids if you are over-hydrated. And your stomach also has a limited capacity to expand in one point in time. Naturally, if you fill it too much, your stomach will hurt and you might even vomit. Listening to your body is the best thing to do. Drink slowly and as much as you can. There is no doubt that there are many benefits of drinking water after waking up, but it doesn't mean you drink all of it - the recommended 8-10 glasses a day - in one sitting.

Why Drinking Water On Empty Stomach Is Important?

When you wake up after a long sleep, your body is naturally dehydrated. No matter how much water you drink the day before, you have used up all your stores. The body never stops working while you sleep. The heart continues pumping blood, we continue breathing and all metabolic activities continue functioning, even if it's at a slower rate. The benefits of drinking water after waking up include rehydration, boosting metabolism, giving a push to your kidneys telling them to start the day on a refreshing note. You're actually getting your body set to begin the day. Compare this to the norm of drinking a 16 oz. cup of coffee (loaded with sugar and caffeine) which can further dehydrate your already thirsty body.

Immediate, major noticeable benefits of drinking water after waking up include:

1. Hydration:

Water is an inexpensive (or free), widely available, caffeine free and naturally low in sodium liquid ready for ingestion any time of the day. Rather than filling up on carbonated drinks, full of nutrient deficient, empty calories and or caffeinated beverages all day, making water preferable as a primary source of hydration is the best choice a person can make. Dehydration isn’t as uncommon as people might think and it comes in many forms. Dehydration doesn’t necessarily mean you’re feeling lightheaded and thirsty. Dehydration simply means the body isn’t getting the water it needs to run to its fullest.

We’re constantly losing water through urine, stool, tears, breath and sweat. Even when we are not sweating, there is some evaporation of water through our skin. We need to continue replenishing the water content of our body by sipping small amounts all day.

Most health professionals recommend taking 8 glasses of 8 oz water all day. This is called 8x8 rule. This equals to about 2 liters of pure water, no caffeine, no sugars, no cream.

2. Heartburn and Indigestion:

This is very simple. Heart burn and indigestion is mostly a result of increased acidity in the stomach that refluxes into the esophagus. The cause is mostly over eating, eating fast, eating spicy and oily food. Those who suffer from GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease) are asked to sleep with their head elevated to ease the discomfort of heart burn. Drinking water early morning without brushing will push down and dilute any of the acid in the empty stomach that is waiting to cause discomfort. It will also fill up the stomach to give it a head start, so as to churn any food that is ready to come in. It is recommended to start your day with a glass of water and a heavy breakfast to keep you feeling full, fresh and active all day long.

3. Regulate Bowel Activity:

The main cause of constipation is dehydration. Increasing water intake can help with constipation, which is a very common problem. Benefits of drinking water after waking up will not only cure dehydration but will add fluid to the colon and bulk to stools, making bowel movements softer and easier to pass. This is a great way to stimulate bowel movement. Your body depends on rhythmic contractions that occur in your colon to help move food along. These contractions depend on gastrocolic reflex, which is when you fill your stomach with food or drink, your body senses a new arrival and sends signals to your intestines to evacuate, increasing the likelihood of a bowel movement. To achieve this, water is a good calorie free choice.

4. Glowing Skin And Shiny Hair

It has been found that adequate hydration has a profound effect on healthy skin and hair. Without water, skin would appear dull with prominent pores and wrinkles. A variety of skin structures, that support collagen build up responsible for skin elasticity, require water to work effectively. One study shows that every 500 ml (2cups) of water taken in increases blood flow to the skin, making it look radiant. Another study summarizes that drinking more than 2 L of water per day can have a significant impact on skin physiology. http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/j.1467-2494.2007.00366.x/abstract
Water also increases the metabolic rate and promotes the digestive system to flush out toxins from the body. This in turn also gives you a healthy and glowing skin.

Just like our skin, hair also needs lubrication from inside out. Dehydration has a direct impact on the growth of hair. Lack of moisture results in dry and brittle hair and water is a natural miracle ingredient that supports vitamin consumption and assists in efficient and healthy hair growth. Water makes almost ¼ of the weight of a hair strand, thus, drinking 8-10 glasses of water every day will give you gleaming and healthy tresses. Our hair thrives on moisture-rich environment and water is one of the best ways to quench its thirst.

5. Prevents Gall Stones, Kidney Stones and Bladder Infections:

Adequate water intake is known for preventing stones in gall bladder and kidneys, basically because of diluting effect. However it is essential to maintain balance between water intake and water output. Naturally we cannot count how much water is lost when we sweat, especially after a work out or some strenuous activity, so we tend to keep drinking to rehydrate. Normally, a healthy kidney has the capacity to excrete 800 ml to 1 liter of water every hour. Every 3-4 liters of fluid ingested, including water in food and other beverages will produce 2.5-3 liters of urine. So it is not recommended to take in more than 1 liter (4-6 glasses) of water in one hour as it will put load on the kidney.

Also it is advisable to eat water rich foods like grapes, berries, melons, citrus fruits, and tomatoes etc that add to the water content in your body and limit salt intake as it tends to retain water and your urine output may not be as much as you are drinking. The more urine you pass, the better it is for kidneys and bladder infections.

6. Water As A Superb Detox:

Another benefit of drinking water after waking up is that you provide your body with a good supply of fluid to flush out the toxic waste products of metabolism that occurred throughout the night. This cleansing process gets rid of harmful substances that could have disrupted the normal functioning of the body. Water removes toxins and waste products from the body thereby cleansing it. Water is required to process all the nutrients from the food we eat and carry the assimilated nutrients to the cells.

7. Crucial For Weight loss:

Drinking water is a crucial tactic when it comes to weight loss. But drinking water after waking up is the most optimal way to do it. Firstly, it purifies the colon and it improves the stomach's chances to absorb nutrients properly. A better digestive system automatically takes care of a lot of other things.  Then it kick starts your metabolism & has been proven to increase your calorie burning potential throughout the day. Not only that, but water actually fills you up & curbs your appetite, allowing you to make smarter choices for your breakfast. According to two studies, drinking 500 ml (17 oz) of water can temporarily boost metabolism by 24-30%. It is better to drink cold water to increase energy expenditure, as body will use energy (calories) to bring the water to body temperature. Researchers also estimate drinking 2 liters (68 ounces) in one day can increase energy expenditure by about 96 calories per day. Drinking water half an hour before meals can also reduce the amount of calories people end up consuming, especially in older individuals. One study showed that dieters who drank 500 ml of water before meals lost 44% more weight over a period of 12 weeks, compared to those who didn’t. Overall, it seems that drinking adequate water (especially before meals) may have a significant weight loss, especially when combined with a healthy diet.

We tend to complicate things when it comes to taking care of our health. A few simple steps can go a long way in taking care of ourselves. One easy way is by drinking sufficient water on empty stomach first thing in the morning. Not only will it clear the stomach, it will go a long way in reducing the risk of a number of diseases. The truth is water is not only a miracle cure but is also a very vital part to a person’s well being. Simply put, taking care of your body and keeping it hydrated and active, can work wonders for your health.

10 Hilarious Happenings in the Life of a Working Mum

Wow!
Is tomorrow holiday?

This is the first reaction of none other than a working mum on hearing an unexpected, non gazetted holiday. Working Offs are the blessings for the mums who are on their heels all week round whether they used to work from home or supporting the family by some 9 to 5 job. In both cases the major load of work share falls on the weak shoulders of a mum.

Here are some funny peeps from the the life of a working mum.

Forgetful Mama:
Mornings are the most energy testing time for the family when everyone is running to get ready to reach their workplace on time. Mums who drive to their workplace themselves, often forget to put the mobile(or some other important thing.....) in their bag and reaching the midway they got to remember that  Oh ! My mobile was on the table. Now they rush back to the home, tic tacking with high heels, nearly falling to grasp the phone with an extended hand and than again racing to the car to get back to work.

Taking Selfies:
Yeah! you enjoy having selfies not only alone but with your children around, on your shoulder, pulling your cloths. Kids get tired of saying "cheese" for capturing the perfect moment but you go on. then you share the most random pic within your social circle and add a feather to your family pic scene. Don't care if it appears upside down.

Weight Watching:
Mums especially those working in corporate environment are obsessed with their looks and weight but on every holiday, believe me, every day off, they plan to dine out with the family forgetting the sweaty run on the tread mill last week. Go on Mama.

Kids Attack:
As soon a mum stepped into the home, before getting hugs and kisses, her bag is attacked by the kids vigorously searched  for any type of goodies, leftover sweets. Don't forget to buy a handful of smarties on the way home to catch the unexpected grin of your sweetie pie.

Sleep Dilemma:
Every mum must have experienced this that as soon as they are about to fall in deep sleep, the baby starts crying in high pitch voice giving you goose bumps. Now the next morning you woke up with the heavy eyes, half closed, rush to the kitchen for the mistake of  bathroom and suddenly realized this before its too late.

My Bag , My Treasure:
Most working mums like me never allow anybody to sneak peep into my hand bag as it is full of baby accessories like Bibs, Diapers, ready made Food etc. Most of the time it is turned into a heavy balloon and needs a man's space to sit, gaining people's stares.

Missing the Right Pair:
Whenever you see a woman with wrong pair of shoes or socks, don't laugh. It is reliable proof of being a working mum. You should rather run to greet her and acknowledge her effort.

Eating Disorder:
Whenever a mom gets the golden opportunity to sit down peacefully for the lunch, the kid screams to have to go for the potty. There you go, getting up half way from the lunch as you have to accompany your sweetie pie to the toilet and wait for another 10 minutes while the food on the table simply gets cold.

Day out:
Till late night, you planned to have a great weekend spending time with your kids visiting the local park which had a grand opening just a month ago, when you informed this to your kids, they get excited too and eagerly waiting for that day.But as soon as the day arrived, the weather go bad ruining all your plans. You just end up staring from the window with the kids around.

Editor at Home:
If you are a WAHM(working at home mom) you get this rare moment to catch a glimpse of your blog post, a kid appears from nowhere (read under the bed) on start clicking the keyboard with all fingers and you get this s;';.,,apsdm...mmmmmmmmm.';;0998766&^^%$%
Don't dare to stop him otherwise you are responsible for the consequences.

Do set goals, make plans. Work hard to make your dreams come true, but don't be stubborn, have a loose grip on them.
Trust that life will carry you to your true path, cherish those little moments of joy as these golden moments of seeing your kids grow will soon become your cherished memories.

Causes Of Missed Period And Negative Pregnancy Test

********   Note: This Blog Post First Published on Just Health And Lifestyle  *********

As a lady doctor, I am often asked about a woman’s “private” issues, particularly reasons for a missed period and negative pregnancy test. At times, the lack of knowledge on show from many woman is quite frustrating for me. But you take things like these as a matter of routine and continue to inform as best you can.

Yesterday a distant relative came to visit us at lunch. As I was busy in the kitchen, she quietly approached and asked me about her missed period and negative pregnancy test. I was awestruck as I had no idea that she was going to ask me this in the kitchen. She kept eagerly waiting for my response. I had the feeling that at her age (45+) there is less chances of conception but at the same time I didn’t want to break her heart. She seemed quite hopeful. I simply reassured her, and told her to confirmation from a gynecologist to be sure.

Now I understand, that missed period and negative pregnancy test can be a very nervous situation for women. This rings true for those who want to conceive and also for those who don’t want to. It can ignite a halo of apprehensions and fears like

“I must be pregnant, there is something wrong with the test strips”

“The emotional stress I am undergoing is the culprit for this delay”

Let’s take a periscopic look at the situation and delve deeper into the causes of a missed period and negative pregnancy test.

Causes of Missed Period And Negative Pregnancy Test

When you are not Pregnant

When you are not pregnant but still have late period, a missed period and negative pregnancy test, it could be due to the following reasons:

1.      Irregular Cycles

Many woman don’t have the regular monthly cycles leading to delays which is normal pattern for them.

2.      Stress

Anxiety is also responsible for delaying the onset of period. The uterine wall will shed down late due to thickness of the endometrium.

Regular exercise and healthy diet can cure it.

3.      Weight

Over and underweight females can also suffer from the menstruation irregularities due to hormonal imbalance.

4.      Vigorous exercise

Vigorous exercise causing stress on the reproductive system may prevent the period altogether.

5.      Medicines

Birth control medicines and implants, Antidepressants, Chemotherapy drugs all cause cycle irregularity leading to miss periods.

6.       Premenopause

The rise in FSH (Follicle stimulating hormone) as you reach a certain age can cause delay and irregularities in your cycle.

7.      Breast Feeding Mother

Breast feeding mothers may experience late periods or no periods at all due to the increase of prolactin in their bodies.

8.      Thyroid Disorder

Both Hypo and Hyper thyroid patients suffer from periods which are not only irregular but with an altered flow (Heavy and Light)

9.      Uterine Abnormalities

Polyps, cysts, fibroids all contribute to the physical cause of late periods in women suffering from those diseases.

10.  PCOS

Polycystic ovarian syndrome is a condition which affects the egg producing ability of the ovaries due to hormonal imbalance. It can lead to a missed period and negative pregnancy test too.

You can learn more about PCOS here

When you are Pregnant

If you are of a reproductive age who is sexually active and experiencing pregnancy symptoms like nausea, altered sense of smell, tender nipples but had a missed period and negative pregnancy test, it is most probably due to a wrong pregnancy test i.e False –ve.

What is False Negative?

False negative is when you are experiencing pregnancy signs and symptoms but the test literally negates any conception. The causes of false negatives are:

1.      The test strip has lower sensitivity

Some tests are more sensitive to hCG (pregnancy hormone) levels compared to others. If it comes negative initially, it is suggested to repeat the test in few days.

2.      Urine is not of correct composition

The urine sample which was tested is either too dilute due to increased water intake. Or the test was done at the wrong time of the day.

It is highly recommended that you use early morning pee as it contains the highest concentration of hCG.

3.      The improper use of Testing kit

The instructions on the testing kit leaflet may have not been followed properly leading to a false negative. Once again, it is best to retest in a few days.

There are many reasons for the late periods. Most irregular periods causes are not at all dangerous and can be easily treated. The best thing to do is to visit your gynecologist if the issue persists.
